Welcome to the very first episode of our Affordable Housing miniseries. In this series, we are diving deep into a critical global issue: affordable housing. Access to safe and secure homes is a challenge for millions worldwide.
Indeed, affordable housing is a concern that spans continents and income levels. The World Bank estimates that over 330 million people globally lack adequate housing. This issue touches everyone, from those in the wealthiest nations facing escalating costs to individuals in emerging markets dealing with lower purchasing power. Clearly, where we live is a fundamental need for all and requires urgent attention.
The Flywheel Economics team is embarking on this miniseries to make sense of this complex puzzle. We aim to explore innovative solutions. Our discussions will bridge the gap between affordability and sustainability. We want to understand how everyone can gain access to a safe and secure home. This includes examining various crucial components, such as financing, barriers to affordable homes and potential for scale.
Laying the Foundation
In this introductory episode, we set the stage. We explore the current landscape of affordable housing challenges. Furthermore, we begin to look at the ecosystem required to deliver housing at scale. A key part of this ecosystem is effective financing and innovative solutions.
